Doctor Soren Moller: Chief Medical Officer

"All I wanted was revenge.  All I carried in me was hate.  Do you know how hard is is to carry all that round when you can't even put a face on the thing you are hating?"

Soren Moller
Chief Medical Officer, USS Mariner
DOB: 18/09/ 2115
Athens, Georgia, Earth
Martial Status: Widower
NOK: none

Appearance:

Soren Moller is a Human male in his early fifties.  Time has softened the rugged frontier doctor but, telling lines betray a lifetime of hard fought experience and the will to persevere.  His hair is unruly, honey coloured, going to gray at the temples.  He has an easy manner and smooth voice that can soothe a patient or defuse a tense situation.  His amiable mien makes him an uncertain officer but, an exceptional physician.

History:

Soren Moller was born in Athens, Georgia in the mid 2110s.  In his youth he was a promising academic, enrolling at the University of Mississippi at age 16.  Upon graduation he attended the School of Medicine at Emory University finishing with honours in 2139  just as the Vulcan High Command founded the Interspecies Medical Exchange.  Much of humanity's recent advances in the field had been inherited from the Vulcans.  With no ties, and the opportunity laid before him he couldn't help but apply.  His promising achievements made him an ideal candidate and on acceptance he spent a number of years volunteering with the program on Vulcan, Denobula, and Mazar.

In 2144 Soren was working on Mazar when he met Moira Lerner, a fellow doctor and IME participant.  What began as a heated discussion about Vulcan physiology resulted in them dating, then marriage the following year.  The newly wed Mollers decided to return to Earth and settled in Atlanta.  By 2153 both Mollers had been in residence at the venerable Saint Joseph's Hospital for nearly a decade.  Their first born, Sara was five years old and Noah was nearly two when the Xindi weapon hit Earth.

The proximity of the attack terrified Soren and Moira.  Fearful for their children the Mollers fell in with a group of survivalist colonists who resolved to leave Earth and the dangers there for a new world.  The transit to the M class planet Lasker's World took nearly a year at warp 4 but their arrival on the surface made it all worthwhile.  Frontier life was tough but rewarding.  The Mollers were well liked and their medical backgrounds made them invaluable members of the community where they ran a small clinic in the burgeoning colony.

In 2156 Lasker's World colonists discovered their off planet communications were offline.  Attributing the failure to a faulty relay they were taken by surprise when the main colony was bombarded from orbit by a Romulan vessel in one of the earliest exchanges in the Earth-Romulan War.  Soren had been responding to a medical emergency in one of the outlying steadings and had time to take refuge in a bunker before the craft repositioned.  To his horror both his wife an children were killed in the massacre.  His grief became anger and by the time relief had made it's way to the ruins of the colony he resolved himself to vengeance.

Moller enlisted in Earth Starfleet for the duration of the war.  He served on board the USS Magnificent, an Intrepid class starship that saw action most notably at Cheron.  He never found the satisfaction or closure he had hoped for in the conflict.  The waste of lives troubled him and at war's end he left Starfleet.

Doctor Moller's return to Earth and civilian life found him involved with his alma mater Emory.  He became involved with a program rehabilitating wounded veterans and researching regenerative therapy.  His new vocation gave him some peace and through healing has been able to work at healing himself.

Role:

Moller is a capable physician and a survivor.  His medical expertise dealing with a variety of species and his work with war veterans make him an excellent choice to have on board a Federation starship.  His life in the colonies make him adaptable and able to  perform his duties in less than optimal settings.  As well as providing specialized care for a prospective crew the Moller character also offers some interesting roleplaying possibilities.  While his veneer of, "friendly country doctor" should serve well enough if the Gamemaster wishes to explore PSTD and survivor guilt a more intimate examination of the character could provide both.

Featuring:

I chose Brad Dourif as the representation of Doctor Moller.  I'm a fan of his work and he has appeared in Trek as the Betazed, Lon Suder on Voyager.  Dourif's characters are often quirky with a twist of darkness about them.  Among his roles I think his Doc Cochran from HBO's Deadwood was both a departure and a standout performance.  Cochran has his demons but the character is a genuinely good man and I hope to channel that in the Moller character.

Alternate Eras:

Soren, or at least someone like him could find a place in other eras by changing the species who attacked the colony he belonged to.  In the TNG the Setik III massacre during the Federation Cardassian War might serve as an inspiration.  Moller might have worked with the Maquis or simply have been a displaced Federation civilian.  In the TOS era Klingons or the resurgent Romulan Star Empire might raid an isolated Federation colony.
